2009 Garden Walk

Welcome to the Port Washington Garden Club's 2009 Garden Walk information page!

This year's Garden Walk features six beautiful gardens located on quiet neighborhood streets in established neighborhoods on Port Washington's northeast side.

These gardens will be on tour Saturday, July 11 from 9AM until 3PM.  Admission to all six gardens is $5.  Tickets may be purchased at each garden the day of the Walk only, or at the Port Washington Visitors' Center (the Pebble House) at 126 E. Grand Ave.

Got questions?  Please email us or call 262-284-1948!

Garden #1
Jessie & Kevin Gwidt
1541 Parknoll Lane

This is a young family's garden and yard in a quiet neighborhood. Each garden bed is edged in block to give the yard structure. Be sure to look for the variety of pump and watering can fountains. Two-year old Sarah has her own garden, but she still "helps" in the vegetable garden.

Imagine yourself eating out under the pergola with clematis walls with their own windows.

Garden #2
Nancy & Al Haacke
1509 Parkview Lane

Nancy loves to work the outdoors into the garden and bring the garden into her house. Her artistic sensibilities can be seen in the color related plantings. Nancy draws inspiration from her gardens for her textile works, some of which will be on display.

Look at the use of chairs not only for seating, but also for plantings. Pumps abound in this garden as well, including the one from Nancy's childhood home; their only source of running water. And be sure to interact with the ladybugs.

Garden #3
Linda & Mark Gottlieb
1205 Noridge Trail

Linda has never met a plant she didn't like! And most have followed her home. As the trees in the yard are maturing, the gardens need to be expanded to take advantage of the sunlight.

As you walk the garden be sure to notice the garden art. But beware; a young fawn may come skittering out of the pines as you walk by. Being so close to the lake bluff, gardening with the deer has its challenges.

Garden #4
Frank & Cathy Metz
314 E. Whitefish Road

Located on a very sloping yard above the bike path, this garden is the product of over 40 years of work. The well-planted driveway circle and stone-fronted house begin to hint at what lies behind the house.

Walk around the garage and the terraced back yard comes into view. Three levels of seating and planting have been formed behind the house from Lannon stone and Mexican river stone. Enter the yard and walk the paths through the planting beds. Marvel at the gnarled old trees.

Garden #5
Kristine McConighan
621 N. Powers

This was one of the Port Washington Garden Club's Spring Garden winners. Now Kristine is planting and creating for equally impressive full seasonal interest. Heavy shade and clay soil have their challenges along with the deer that frequent the garden.

Be sure to check out the use of flowerpots in the garden.

Garden #6
Mary Bernadette
128 E. Kane

Mary is pleased to welcome the walk visitors to her gardens once again. The exuberant front garden continues to receive new plants.

With a granddaughter here many days, Mary is working toward green gardening, avoiding the use of pesticides and chemicals. This allows for inter-plantings of lettuces and greens throughout the garden. You'll walk through Mary's new vertical kitchen garden. Imagine yourself in the backyard for the wedding next weekend or the series of concerts throughout the summer. Mary wants to "live" in her garden!
