Tom HudsonLongtime Port Washington Garden Club member Tom Hudson is a software engineer who started out tending his father's vegetable garden as a boy but got seriously into gardening when he bought a house in Kansas with several established fruit trees. Successfully growing and harvesting his own apples, peaches, cherries and grapes soon became addictive. The gardening bug bit, and soon Tom was growing ornamental plants including hybrid tea roses and orchids. In 1993, Tom moved to Port Washington, moving into a home with a large yard and a couple of neglected pie cherry trees. 29 years later, the property supports 11 types of apples, several pear varieties, cherries (tree and shrub), blueberries, plums, hardy kiwis and non-hardy figs, grown in pots. To support this gardening and amend the sometimes marginal soil, Tom learned about composting and set up several large composting bins and simpler hoops which produce several yards of compost every year. Tom is also a member of the Chicago-based Midwest Fruit Explorers, a group of fruit-growing enthusiasts. Visit www.midfex.org to learn more.
