About the Scholarship

We are pleased to announce the establishment of the Port Washington Garden Club Scholarship!

Since 1932, the Port Washington Garden Club has worked to make Port Washington a better place.  In years past, the club coordinated city-wide decoration projects, sponsored flower shows, and helped build wildlife habitat through construction of bluebird houses.  In more recent years, the Club's plant sales and garden walks have helped the Club fund major landscaping projects like the plantings at the W. J. Niederkorn Library, the Senior Center, daffodils throughout town and Port Washington's beautiful Rotary Park.  In its 73 year history, the club has done a great number of things to enhance life in our fine city.

Now the Club has embarked on a new major project: the establishment of an educational scholarship.  This scholarship will be used to help those in the Port Washington area who are interested in horticulture pay for educational costs.  The scholarship will not only be available to young students just entering college, but will also be available for older adult students finding it necessary or desirable to make a career change!  Any educational field related to horticulture or landscaping qualifies for the scholarship.

An important part of receiving the scholarship is that the student is expected to give back to the community by performing a horticulture-related community service, to be determined by the Club and the student.  Such service could consist of helping with planning for new gardens or other planting in the city, assisting with maintenance of city plantings, or teaching others about gardening.

So far, the Club has contributed over $7,000 to the scholarship fund, which is managed by the well-known Greater Milwaukee Foundation.  In order to begin awarding scholarships, however, the fund must reach a value of $25,000.

How Can I Help?

You can help us reach our $25,000 goal by making a donation to the fund.  And for a limited time, every dollar you give will be doubled, thanks to a generous matching grant from the Port Washington State Bank!  That's right -- if you donate $100, Port Washington State Bank will match your donation dollar-for-dollar, turning your donation into $200!

Thanks to the generosity of the Port Washington State Bank, we hope to begin awarding scholarships to qualified students as soon as 2009.

Your donation is tax-deductible -- The Garden Club is a tax-exempt organization and when you make a donation, you will receive a receipt that you can use at tax time.

So please take a moment and make a donation to the Port Washington Garden Club Scholarship Fund.  You'll not only be making an investment in the future of a Port Washington student, but through our scholarship's community service requirement, you'll be making an investment in the beauty of Port Washington itself!
