Port Washington Garden Club
2004 Garden Walk

July 10, 2004, 9AM - 3PM

  Garden #1:
Kathy and Pat Kernan
201 Antoine Dr.

Walls of flowers and shrubs enclose a beautiful back yard sheltered by a grand old silver maple tree.  Bird houses and feeders are tucked into the plantings, which includes a large trumpet vine.  The yard is accented by arbors supporting golden honeysuckle, wisteria, and climbing hydrangea.  A fish pond and fountain hug the patio.  An easy to care for elevated vegetable garden is cleverly designed.  The front yard focuses on decorative grasses.

  Garden #2:
Roann Zahn
257 E. Monroe St.

An eye-catching purple front door welcomes you to this home.  The terraced back yard is anchored by a proud old apple tree, and ringed by flowing beds to create a cozy garden room.  A purple and yellow planting area boasts copper tubing garden structures. Clematis, peonies, and daylilies abound.  A high moisture garden area flourishes with wet feet.  Roann has incorporated many interesting garden sculptures and artwork among her plantings, and has proven that a tiny yard can be enchanting!

  Garden #3:
Jackie and Doug Schwanz
1335 Niesen Rd.

Stroll through a yard of native plants, and into a private woods.  Enjoy a fairy garden, and look for angels throughout the flowery property.   A lovely antique handmade wooden garden bench is nestled near a birdhouse collection.  Garbara daisies are a sentimental favorite of Jackie’s.

  Garden #4:
Rick and Onnie Laue
901 Noridge Trail

Discover a unique, imaginative garden creation at the Laue’s.  Featured is a classy collection of salvage art presented in little vignettes along winding paths.  Look for the wooden fence built around a tree’s branches, and old evergreen shrubs pruned into artistic shapes.  A small wooden deck leads you around to the front yard with more interesting plantings.

  Garden #5:
Christy and Ken Jensen
915 Hales Trail

A massive willow tree welcomes you to the home of Ken and Christy Jensen.  Abundant fruits and flowers are found throughout the yard with 15 fruit trees including pear, peach and apple, and many deer resistant perennials.  A motion activated water cannon disguised as a scarecrow helps discourage deer (and unsuspecting visitors)!  A pond, patios, and pavers are also featured in the back yard with a beautiful three season glass sunroom.

  Garden #6:
Vera and Armond Messnick
810 Hales Trail

Brick edging surrounds beds of many unique perennials and trees which flow around the property.  A special favorite of Vera’s is peony trees.  The patio, sheltered by a pergola lushly hung with flowering pots, is a wonderful place to relax.  A clever childrens’ play area supports vines and other flowers.  A wide variety of plants are showcased in this yard which blends imperceptibly with the neighbors’.
